Starlog: Calculate the Yield of This Quote

"STARLOG: The Star Wars Universe is so large and diverse.  Do you ever find yourself confused by the subsidiary material that's in the novels, comics, and other offshoots?

LUCAS:  I don't read that stuff. I haven't read any of the novels.  I don't know anything about that world.  That's a different world than my world.  But I do try to keep it consistent.  The way I do it now is they have a Star Wars Encyclopedia.  So if I come up with a name or something else, I look it up and see if it has already been used.  When I said [other people] could make their own Star Wars stories, we decided that, like Star Trek, we would have two universes: My universe and then this other one.  They try to make their universe as consistent with mine as possible, but obviously they get enthusiastic and want to go off in other directions."

- George Lucas, Flannelled One, Aug. 2005 - "New Hopes" interview in Starlog #337

Scans forthcoming.

Seems rather clear.

I fail to see how it could be more clear.

Whoa . . . just passed the mouse over your name and found your site. Looks nice! I'll give it a readthrough.

The Warsies can't squirm their way out of this one.

Hey Spock, glad to see you're finally advertising your site, mind if I put it on my links page?

Indeed. They heard it from Lucas himself, and none of us can dispute that. I think you've nailed it with this one, G2k, well done.

Well, it looks like the end is near, and about time to. I'd like to see the Warsies try and "rationalize" this away.

They already have begun in force, The Swede is quite intent on spinning it in their favor on my own forums.

Well, that's the strange thing really . . . so far there's been no real effort at all. Swede just denied that it meant what everyone thinks it meant and evaded taking any particular position as much as possible. When finally nailed to a position, he went for absurd ideas about not listening to Lucas and conceding to the very idea I was trying to get him to understand, all while engaging in further denial. That's not so much "effort" as it is "being ridiculous".

Poe simply gave some quotes intending to show that Lucas was involved with the EU, and mentioned a couple of standard talking points in passing (but in general, has utterly missed his chance).

Brian Young (of Turbolaser Commentaries fame) acknowledged the parallel universe just today (http://blogs.starwars.com/hydrospanner/3/comments).

Wong and the rest have been utterly silent.

Curious indeed are the effects of this newest bombshell.

I don't mind. I recommend you include the caveat that the page is very much under construction, though.

What's perhaps most interesting about the reaction thus far is that some - if I read this correctly - are now making a much clearer claim that the ICS and other sourcebooks are more authoritative than the movies themselves, which are at best a cinematic depiction of Star Wars.

Historically speaking, this marks quite a shift over time.
